Are you looking to install a new fence around your yard, but you're undecided on the type of material you want to use? If so, you should know the differences between cedarwood and vinyl material.

The Cost

When you are comparing the cost of a cedar and vinyl fence, it is important to take into consideration all of the costs involved with ownership. Both materials are very similarly priced when it comes to the material. However, you'll see savings over time with a vinyl fence. That is because you will need to spend money over the years to refinish a cedar fence, which can increase the total cost of ownership.

The Installation

The process of installing each of these fences is quite similar, so you should not see many differences with the installation in terms of cost or time. Each type of fence can be installed with panels, which are attached to fence posts that are buried in the ground. This is another reason why cedar fencing has a similar cost to vinyl when professionally installed.

The Look

Some people really love the look of a wood fence, which is why they go with cedar as their fencing material of choice. Vinyl can have an unnatural look to it, and as a homeowner, you may only want to surround your home with natural-looking materials. This is simply not possible when you have vinyl fencing, which is going to look like a type of plastic material.

The Maintenance

Vinyl fencing is going to require a lot less maintenance over the yeast than a cedar fence. That is because vinyl only needs to be washed when it becomes dirty, which can be done by spraying down the fence with a hose and scrubbing it. Cedar will require periodic sanding and staining to protect the wood, which can't be avoided if you want to extend the lifespan of the fence.

However, the need to sand and stain a cedar fence should not always be viewed as a downfall of the material. You can use this as an opportunity to change the look of your fence by using a lighter or darker stain. This is something that can't be done with vinyl.

The Repairs

Be aware that a cedar fence is going to be much easier to repair than a vinyl fence. With cedar, all you need to do is remove the damaged boards and install a new one. With vinyl, you need to do more work to patch a hole in the material or replace the entire panel with a brand new one.
