When you have a wooden fence installed around your backyard, you may find that you need to stain it at some point. This way, the wood doesn't appear dull but is instead a vibrant backdrop for your landscaping. When you first have a wood fence installed, be sure to choose wood that is already stained in the color that you want. This way, you don't have to worry about staining it for some time to come. When you do need to stain your fence, though, consider these five tips:

  1. Cover Plants and the House With Thick Plastic: Any areas where the fence is touching the house, the house needs to be covered in plastic, and the plants need thick plastic on top of them so that if any stain is spilled, the chemicals will not kill them. By doing this, you can save yourself from having a huge mess to clean up after staining the fence.
  2. Clean and Sand the Fence: You should power-wash the fence before you stain it to remove surface dirt that would otherwise give the fence a less-than-clean finish. Once the fence has dried, you can then sand it down. Be sure that you brush off the sawdust after sanding to ensure a clean surface.
  3. Let the Fence Dry: After power washing the fence, you need to let it dry for a couple of days. If it rains during this time, then you should again wait for a few days afterward. The stain will not stick if the fence is wet, and wood takes a long time to dry compared to other materials.
  4. Check the Forecast: It's very important that you check the forecast. It's best to power wash the fence during a time when no rain is expected for the next week or two because your fence can easily become dirty again, since rain water isn't actually clean water.
  5. Use a Staining Brush: Don't just use any brush when you stain your fence. Instead, you should use a staining brush because these are thicker and won't leave obvious brush strokes. This way, it appears that the wood of the fence is naturally that color, which looks much more beautiful with your landscaping.

When you consider these five tips, you can be sure that you have a clean wood finish when you're done. If you don't have time for this yourself, you can also hire fencing professionals who will get the job done right for you, as well. Contact a company like Clendaniel Fence Co to learn more.
