How to Create Your Own Chain-Link Fence Art
ShareChain-link fences are often used on residential properties because they offer protection from people and animals walking by and allow you to see through your garden fence into the surrounding neighborhood. You can plant many different climbing vines and vegetation at the base of your chain-link fence to decorate your fence and to give you more privacy. For a unique and different alternative, you can decorate your chain-link fence with other materials and create unique chain-link fence art. Here are some ideas for creating an artistic and beautiful residential chain-link fence.
Wood-Slat Chain-Link Fence
Thin slats of wood can be woven diagonally through a chain-link fence to create a privacy fence that easily blends with your garden plants and trees. These bendable slats of wood are available in standard chain-link fence measurements at most hardware and garden centers. When installing your wood slats, start at the top corner of your chain-link fence panel and weave a slat of wood diagonally down to a side rail. Trim the wood slat flush with the side rail with a cordless reciprocating handsaw. Continue to weave more thin slats of wood through your chain-link fence until you have completely filled in all of the spaces in the chain-link fence panel. You can continue to weave more thin wood slats into each chain-link fence panel. For a unique look, you can alternate your diagonal pattern on each fencing panel. You can also weave your wood slats vertically on your chain-link fence for a more traditional look.
Transparent Chain-Link Fence Squares
Transparent-colored plastic sheets can be purchased at art supply stores and home and garden supply stores and used to fill in the spaces in a chain-link fence. Measure the spaces in your chain-link fence and cut your transparent-colored plastic sheets into square shapes that fit inside of each square. With a hand drill, drill a hole in each of the four corners of each colored plastic square. With 12–18 gauge galvanized multi-purpose wire, attach all four corners of each plastic square to each of the corners of your chain-link fence spaces. This wire is available at any hardware store. With these transparent-colored squares, you can create multi-colored patterns, designs, and images on your chain-link fence. Before you begin, you can easily plan your designs with some graph paper and colored pencils or pens.
Opaque Chain-Link Fence Squares
Instead of using colored plastic sheets to decorate your chain-link fence, you can use opaque plastic sheets that can be cut to size to fit within each of the chain-link spaces. After measuring and cutting your squares, drill a hole in each corner and attach each opaque square at the four corners of each of your chain-link fence spaces. As with the colored plastic squares, you can create many simple or intricate patterns, designs, and images on your chain-link fence. Each panel can be a unique design, or a single pattern can flow horizontally throughout all of your chain-link panels.
Artificial Hedge Garlands for a Chain-Link Fence
For a traditional garden effect, you can purchase artificial hedge garlands to weave into your chain-link fence. These green artificial garlands come in long lengths and resemble fur-tree branches, boxwood plants, and different types of ivy. They are artificial, so they are maintenance free and water resistant. Once they are installed, you will have a perennial green hedge on your chain-link fence.
You can choose to install a chain-link fence covering that is colorful or traditional garden green. Whatever material you choose will act as an effective windscreen and give you increased privacy. With a little planning and installation, you can create your own chain-link fence art that will last for years and give your residential yard a beautiful look in your neighborhood.
